According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the following is true:

In 2018, there were a total of 1,031 fatalities in Illinois. Of that number, 948 people were killed as a result of car crashes. A total of 330 people were utilizing seatbelts when they were killed, compared to 258 people who hadn’t used a restraint at all, or utilized it improperly. In addition, 155 people who died were unlicensed drivers.

Now, let’s compare that data to 2017 fatalities. There were a total of 1,090 fatalities. Of that number, 998 people were killed as a result of car crashes. A total of 351 people were utilizing seatbelts when they were killed, compared to 270 people who hadn’t used a restraint at all, or utilized it improperly. In addition, 193 people who died were unlicensed drivers.

In 2016, there were a total of 1,078 fatalities. Of that number, 1,000 people were killed as a result of car crashes. A total of 363 people were utilizing seatbelts when they were killed, compared to 268 people who hadn’t used a restraint at all, or utilized it improperly. In addition, 173 people who died were unlicensed drivers.

In 2015, there were a total of 998 fatalities. Of that number, 914 people were killed as a result of car crashes. A total of 293 people were utilizing seatbelts when they were killed, compared to 243 people who hadn’t used a restraint at all, or utilized it improperly. In addition, 133 people who died were unlicensed drivers.

As seen from the data above, traffic fatalities have increased since 2015. It is difficult to determine exactly what is causing the shift, but it is most likely a result of several different factors.
